The History Of Transcendental Meditation

The history of Transcendental Meditation doesn't date back as far as other forms of meditation.

It began in 1957, TM is a type of meditation that is aimed at developing a person's mind so he/she can rise above the noise of a hectic every day life. The founder and developer of TM is Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, he was born in 1917, he was a disciple of a spiritual leader of Jyotir Math called Swami Brahmanada Saraswati.

From 1958 to 2008, he taught enlightenment and spiritual regeneration to his disciples. Some of his disciples were well known to us, such as, The Beatles, Mick Jagger and Clint Eastwood.

In 1958, Maharishi began to tour the world teaching his meditation techniques through lectures, at first in the far East, then going to America and Europe.

He saw a need to train people to teach his techniques so that they could be taught in more countries. He held is first training course in Rishikesh, India and Transcendental meditation became very popular.

From 1970, over the next 30 years, Maharishi started his plan to build one Transcendental Meditation teaching center for every million of the world's population.

Also during the 1970's the first scientific research papers were published about TM, since then over 600 studies have been published about the benefits of The TM program, some of these include, reduced stress levels, better health, heightened intelligence and self-realization.

TM had reached it's peak of success in the mid 1970's, after some bad publicity, they were accused of fraud for charging clients to teach them to "fly". People started to turn away from it.

Even with it's members dropping, you can still find TM learning centers internationally where people find the program beneficial enough to pay $2,500 for a basic meditation course.

Maharishi retired from his position in January 2008 after fifty years and he died almost a month later. He had turned TM in to a multi-billion dollar business that has helped millions of people all over the world.

Time will tell if his teachings will last and continue to bring people the harmony he hoped to spread to the world. Since it began, TM has taught millions of people in spiritually uplifting methods.
