The History of Taoist Meditation

The history of Taoist meditation started by Zhang Daoling of the Han Dynasty in the 2nd century A.D. Tao in the west is seen to come from the teachings of Laozi around 600 B.C in china.

It was later approved as a state religion with Laozi being worshiped as a deity.

Throughout history, Taoism has transformed into many different forms, reflecting the variety of the Chinese culture.

Tao can mainly be described as the spirit of all things, a devotion to Taoism can been seen as a natural surrender to nature and a merging with the harmony of all things.

Tao is an adoption of pre-Taoist forms of nature worship that teaches unity with nature rather than encouraging the control of it through the ritual practice of magic.

In a sense they abolished the literal worship of nature because they prefer to harmonise with natural events.

Taoism is not that different from Zen Buddhism, Tao teaches the importance of 'no action' and Zen Buddhism teaches the principle of 'just sitting'. Tao is set apart by a love of nature in a way which may appeal to Western people who often don't feel at one with nature.

There are a number of forms of This type of meditation, if you wish to follow the path of Taoism, it is not that different to any other basic meditation practice. Careful thought on Laozi's 'Tao Che Ching' may help you to take up that mind frame.

Though in Western societies, Taoism can be used along with other spiritual practises which maybe useful in developing a greater sense of awarness and a sense of one's place in the world. for information about Zen meditation, click here
