Concentrative Meditation
Concentrative meditation is a good way to help you to quieten the chatter in your mind.
You do this by concentrating on an object such as a crystal or any other object you wish to focus on.
Concentration techniques will help you to divert your attention from any thoughts as they arise, teaching you to focus on one thing at a time.
You learn to neither engage in nor reject the chaotic activity of your mind, rather to recognize and accept what thoughts are there and acknowledge them as they arise and push them aside.
Concentrative meditation will benefit you in many ways just as all forms of meditation will.
Don't be worry if you find it hard to do at first, many people find it hard to concentrate on one thing at a time when they are starting out.
Practise, practise, practise is the only way to learn to concentrate.
You may even find that this form of meditation doesn't suit you, if you do find this is so, simply find one that does suit you or come up with your own unique way, as not every form of meditation will be right for you.
It doesn't mean you are no good at it so don't fall into that way of thinking and give up, find the right way for you. There is no such thing as right or wrong, there is only what is right for you.
Give it a go, you can only benefit from it, be aware that it may take you quite awhile to learn to focus but just remember YOU CAN DO IT.
Try this simple easy to follow meditation, practise it as often as you can, everyday is best, but it's not always possible for everyone to do it everyday.
Pick an object that you find appealing, it might be a crystal, statue of a god, a special picture or even a piece of wood that has an interesting shape.
You should take notice of what you are seeing but don't think about it or enter into an internal discussion in your mind about the object, it is important to get passed the inquisitive nature of the mind which seeks novelty and distraction.
Bring your focus bact to the oject whenever you notice your mind has become distracted by thoughts.
Place the object on the floor a little distance from where you are sitting, relax yourself and focus on it's colour, it's brightness or dullness, it's shape, whether it is rough or smooth. Think about the weight of the oject and how it would feel if you where to touch it.
Then see what associations you make between it's colour and, say, similar colours of nature; perhaps it colour reminds you of the ocean or maybe a forest or a lush green field that has flowers of all colours.
Then think of the smell this arouses and be aware of the emotions that are connected to these associations.
In your own time, allow the visualizations to fade and bring your focus slowly back to the room.
Don't be hard on yourself if you couldn't follow this the first time, keep practising and you will achieve your goal.
Concentrative meditation isn't easy when you first start out as your mind is used to having many many thoughts running through it not focusing on one thing at a time.
